Practical questions

How a giveaway works, from the first tap to the handover.

Last updated: 3 October 2026

Is Kadoz really free?

Yes, entirely, and both ways: giving costs nothing, receiving costs nothing. There is no subscription, no commission and no paid option.

Asking for anything in return — money, a swap, a contribution towards costs — is forbidden and is a serious breach of our terms. An item listed in order to get something back is taken down and the account deleted. This is not a moral stance: it is what lets you reserve an item without having to haggle.

Where does Kadoz work?

In Belgium and Luxembourg. Both countries are covered in full: 1,145 Belgian postcodes and 4,200 Luxembourg ones, with their towns and municipalities.

Luxembourg assigns its postcodes by stretch of street — 4,200 for 640,000 inhabitants, where Belgium has 1,145 for 11.8 million. A Luxembourg postcode therefore often covers a single street, which makes searching nearby more precise than it is in Belgium.

On the website you can browse and reserve in both countries: choose the country before entering your postcode. Listing an item requires the app, which asks for your country when you sign up.

How do I list an item?

A photo, a title, a category, a postcode. The app reads the photo and often suggests the title and category on its own: all you have to do is confirm or correct them.

The volume is worked out from the category — a chest of drawers is 1.20 m³, a chair 0.20. That figure feeds the cubic metres kept off the pavement in your municipality.

Is my address visible?

No. Until you have accepted a request, your item appears only with its town and an approximate circle — never a pin on your front door.

Your exact address is passed only to the person whose request you have accepted, and only to them. If you withdraw your item or cancel, they lose access to it.

How long does my reservation stay valid?

Forty-eight hours from the moment the item is available. After that, if the exchange has not moved forward, the item goes back online and the people who were waiting for it are notified.

An exchange that “moves forward” means a real message in the conversation. As long as you are talking, nothing expires: the time limit exists only to free up items that nobody is responding about any more.

How does the handover work?

The person collecting the item shows a four-character code. The giver scans it or types it in. That action, and that action alone, closes the giveaway.

Without that code, the item stays marked as reserved: it no longer appears in searches but is not counted as given. Get into the habit of scanning it there and then, not later — later, people forget.

How many items can I reserve at once?

Two active collection points at most, and up to six items per collection point. In other words: you can take six items from the same person, but not one item each from six different people.

This limit exists because a reserved item is an item nobody else can see. Reserving widely “just in case” ties up items that someone genuinely needs.

What if nobody comes to collect the item?

Once the time limit has passed, you can report that the person did not turn up. The item goes straight back online and the no-show counts against that person’s reliability. At the third, they can no longer reserve for fifteen days.

Reporting is possible only after twelve hours, so that a giver in a hurry does not penalise someone who is on their way.

The giver is not answering or was not there. What should I do?

You can report it once the agreed slot has passed. You are not penalised in any way, and the no-show counts against the giver: at the third, they can no longer list items for fourteen days.

If the giver simply never answered your request, there was no appointment and therefore no no-show. The item goes back online on its own, and nobody is marked.

I am moving house and have twenty items to give away. How should I go about it?

List them as usual, but group them into a batch. Someone who reserves from a batch can take up to six items in a single trip, with a single handover code.

It is the right way to clear out a cellar or an attic: a visitor who leaves with six items saves you six appointments, and is often keener than a visitor who only wants one.
